چکیده

Polarimetric radar variables of rainfall events, like differential reflectivity ZDR, or specific differential phase KDP, are better suited for estimating rain rate R than just the reflectivity factor for horizontally polarized waves, ZH. A variety of physical and empirical approaches exist to estimate the rain rate from polarimetric radar observables. The relationships vary over a wide range with the location and the weather conditions. In this study, the polarimetric radar variables were simulated for S-, Cand X-band wavelengths in order to establish radar rainfall estimators for the alpine region of the form R(KDP), R(ZH, ZDR), andR(KDP, ZDR). For the simulation drop size distributions of hundreds of 1-minute-rain episodes were obtained from 2D-Video-Distrometer measurements in the mountains of Styria, Austria. The sensitivity of the polarimetric variables to temperature is investigated, as well as the influence of different rain drop shape models – including recently published ones – on radar rainfall estimators. Finally it is shown how the polarimetric radar variables change with the elevation angle of the radar antenna.

A Dual-Polarization Radar Hydrometeor Classification Algorithm for Winter Precipitation

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the use of polarimetric observations in a radar-based winter hydrometeor classification algorithm. This is accomplished by deriving bulk electromagnetic scattering properties of stratiform, cold-season rain, freezing rain, sleet, dry aggregated snowflakes, dendritic snow crystals, and platelike snow crystals at X-, C-, and S-band wavelengths based on ...

Correction of Radar Reflectivity and Differential Reflectivity for Rain Attenuation at X Band. Part I: Theoretical and Empirical Basis

In this two-part paper, a correction for rain attenuation of radar reflectivity (ZH) and differential reflectivity (ZDR) at the X-band wavelength is presented. The correction algorithm that is used is based on the self-consistent method with constraints proposed by Bringi et al., which was originally developed and evaluated for C-band polarimetric radar data. The self-consistent method is modif...

Rainfall rate retrieval in presence of path attenuation using C-band polarimetric weather radars

Weather radar systems are very suitable tools for the monitoring of extreme rainfall events providing measurements with high spatial and temporal resolution over a wide geographical area. Nevertheless, radar rainfall retrieval at C-band is prone to several error sources, such as rain path attenuation which affects the accuracy of inversion algorithms. In this paper, the so-called rain profiling...

ERAD 2010 - THE SIXTH EUROPEAN CONFERENCE ON RADAR IN METEOROLOGY AND HYDROLOGY Resonance scattering at close wavelengths in hail and “clear air”

Carrier frequencies of networked weather radars are allocated in a narrow band, i.e., in X-, C-, and Sbands. To reduce signal interference among adjacent radars, the carrier frequencies are offset. A calibration procedure, running on radars, brings reflectivity values to the same level assuming that the intrinsic reflectivity of the scattering media is the same. This assumption is good for rain...

Rainfall retrieval from polarimetric X-band radar measurements

Dual polarization radars have shown considerable improvement of quantitative estimation of rainfall rate and raindrop size distribution (DSD) parameters. Most studies have been done with S and C-band radars and only a few studies with higher X-band weather radars. X-band radars have the advantages of lower cost and higher differential phase shift but with higher attenuation too. Furthermore, th...
